Ontario Driver’s Licence Guide for Newcomers from the Philippines
A careful overview of the first 60 days, driving experience, and what to prepare before testing.

The first 60 days matter
Ontario states that a new resident may use a valid licence from another province or country for 60 days. After that period, an Ontario licence is generally required to continue driving. Confirm the current rule before relying on an international licence, especially if your status, licence class, or driving history is unusual.
Philippine driving experience may affect your path
Ontario’s process can depend on where you were licensed, how long you have been driving, and what documents you can provide. A driver’s licence is not automatically exchanged in the same way as a licence from every jurisdiction. Bring accurate records and do not assume online advice applies to your class of licence.
Prepare for the knowledge test as a safety test
Study Ontario road signs, right-of-way rules, school zones, winter conditions, demerit points, and alcohol/drug rules. The goal is not only to pass; Canadian driving conditions can be very different from driving in Philippine cities, especially snow, highways, four-way stops, and pedestrian crossings.
Budget for the whole licensing process
Include test fees, identification documents, lessons if needed, insurance, winter tires where appropriate, and vehicle costs. Do not buy a vehicle until you understand licensing, insurance, maintenance, and parking. A cheap car can become expensive if it needs repairs or has high insurance costs.
Build safe habits before your road test
Practice mirror checks, full stops, shoulder checks, lane discipline, parking, merging, and defensive driving. A licensed instructor can identify habits that feel normal elsewhere but can cause a test failure or safety issue in Ontario.
Practical checklist
- Confirm the date you became an Ontario resident
- Bring your valid foreign licence and supporting identification
- Study the official handbook before booking a knowledge test
- Ask DriveTest what proof of experience is accepted
- Budget for lessons, fees, insurance, and vehicle costs
- Do not drive after the permitted period without the required Ontario licence
