The first month in Canada is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about setting up the basics safely: identity, phone, banking, health coverage, housing, transportation, and employment documents.
Week 1: Identity and basic setup
- Apply for or update your Social Insurance Number if you are eligible to work.
- Set up a Canadian phone number and secure email access.
- Open a bank account and learn the difference between debit, credit, chequing, and savings.
- Keep digital and printed copies of your passport, permit, PR document, lease, and important letters.
Week 2: Health, address, and daily life
In Ontario, eligible residents can apply for OHIP health coverage. Requirements depend on your immigration status and residence documents. For everyday life, list your nearest walk-in clinic, pharmacy, grocery store, ServiceOntario, Service Canada, and public transit option.
Week 3: Work and settlement help
Newcomer agencies can help with resume review, language assessment, job search, school information, and community referrals. Many services are free for eligible newcomers.
Week 4: Build routines

Common newcomer mistakes
- Sending original documents without keeping copies.
- Using high-interest credit without a payoff plan.
- Signing rental or phone contracts without reading the cancellation terms.
- Ignoring official letters because they look confusing.
